Benefits of Fasting for IBD
26 min readFasting and intermittent fasting have gained popularity around the world for numerous health benefits—but can fasting be a new treatment for symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis?
Systema Health is a forward-thinking, human-centric health company dedicated to tackling the global epidemic of chronic disease and the resulting gaps in our healthcare delivery systems.
Our mission is to empower individuals to become enhanced versions of themselves by combining the insights of systems thinking and neuroscience with dynamic digital and physical environments.
Through our proprietary framework—Systems-based Health Coaching (SHC)—our members gain a deeper understanding of the biology behind their conditions. They develop tailored dietary and nutritional strategies, navigate both mainstream and integrative healthcare options, and build customized plans designed to improve wellness, achieve remission from chronic diseases, and sustain long-term health.
The most profound healing happens when patients become experts in their own health.
Systema’s founder, Andrew, grew up immersed in systems thinking and human potential concepts at the renowned Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. These early experiences shaped his approach to health and the application of neuroplasticity.
At 16, Andrew embarked on a backpacking trip through Yosemite, unaware that within a week, he would experience his first major symptoms of Crohn’s disease — a condition would challenge him in the years ahead and ultimately inspire his lifelong mission to heal and advance human health.
At the University of California, Santa Cruz, Andrew founded an award winning student-led initiative, the Brain, Mind, and Consciousness Society, which culminated in a large-scale conference and student-led course (pictured above). It was here that he began to see the connections between neuroplasticity, stress, and chronic illness, and the power of education and community. Andrew graduated with dual degrees in Neuroscience and Psychology.
After enduring a relentless 6-month flare of Crohn’s disease, Andrew discovered the power of systems thinking in healing. By applying personalized protocols—focused on diet, nutrition, supplements, and healthcare navigation, blended with traditional and integrative interventions—he achieved remission for the first time. Andrew returned to his love of surfing, nature, and learning— but now with the determination to bring this approach to the world.
In 2018, Andrew made a pivotal decision to leave medicine and asked himself: What if the healthcare system empowered IBD patients with science-backed, targeted interventions—making them the most vital members of their own health team? With that vision, Systema was born, and immediately lives began to change.
Systema approach gained strong scientific backing. Andrew presented research at the Crohn’s & Colitis Congress and published in leading journals such as Gastroenterology and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. Andrew’s work was also featured on top health podcasts, including an episode with Ben Greenfield recorded during a walk around UCLA’s campus. Hundreds of lives were transformed.
While floating in a hot spring river, Andrew solidified the vision for Systema Health. Building on the success of Systema, he envisioned a scalable, systems-based platform to support a variety of chronic health conditions.
The culmination of years of research and practice, Systema Health was launched to the world—merging science, systems thinking, and community-driven support to redefine healthcare for the 21st century.
Today, Systema Health stands as a transformative force in healthcare. Expanding its reach beyond IBD, the organization is committed to providing diverse offerings that empower individuals to achieve lasting health through personalized systems-based approaches.
